ABSTRACT

This paper explores the transformation of two lignite mining regions—Lusatia (Germany) and Upper Nitra (Slovakia)—in the context of coal phase-out and regional rebranding. It identifies core principles of the IBA Fürst‑Pückler‑Land programme and assesses their transferability to Upper Nitra through a comparative case study of Garden City Marga and the Píly housing estate in Prievidza. The study combines document analysis with field observations and qualitative inputs (commented walks and an interview). Results show that the Lusatian approach integrates intermediary programme management, thematic framing and tourism-oriented branding. In Upper Nitra, the Píly estate demonstrates significant heritage and interpretation potential, supported by a large sgraffito corpus and emerging digital tools. Transferable measures include on-site interpretation, regular guided tours, thematic routes, a visitor point and heritage protection, while key barriers involve uncoordinated retrofitting, missing restoration guidelines and unstable funding.
